Homework Week 7
CompuServe and GIF File Extensions-
Developed by CompuServe in 1987, Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) files are used to depict images online. GIF utilizes "indexed color," which limits the color pallette to only 256 colors. Though GIF's limited color range is inappropriate for expanded 24 bit color images, its small file size can be very useful in designing webpages where an expanded color pallette is unnecessary. Web designers are well advised to take full advantage of the faster-loading GIF files wherever possible.
Image Optimization
Image optimization in web designing is the practice of implementing tools on files, images, and photographs that will effect optimum page-loading speed. One example of image optimization is the utilization of GIF files (which are small) wherever possible. Also important in this efficiency implementation is preventing visual degradation in your web pages while simultaneously stressing speed.
Screen Resolution in Web Designing
Screen resolution is the number of pixels which reside in a screen viewing space. For instance a screen resolution of 1024x768 equates to 1024 pixels horizontally and 768 pixels vertically. (Many websites are geared in that resolution). Proper screen resolution setting will prevent awkward scrolling and searching your webpages for pertinent information. Liquid layout will form itself to the user's window size. Consider popular browsers in your decision-making.
Section 508 Compliancy Standards
Many provisions of the 508 compliancy standards as it relates to websites ensure access for the visually-impaired. Screen readers are an example of one of these tools. These readers translate computer text and images into automated audible files. For more information on Section 508 Standards click here.
